Professional Standards

The Council for Exceptional Children publishes professional standards to ensure that students with disabilities receive high-quality instruction from well-prepared educators.
What Every Special Educator Should Know, Revised 2009

In addition to the CEC Professional Standards, the Division on Visual Impairments and Deafblindness (DVIDB) publishes standards for the initial certification of teachers of students with visual impairments and guidelines for the specialized knowledge and skill set for interveners who work with students with deafblindness. Adherence to these standards ensures that students with visual impairments and those with deafblindness are served by educators who possess the knowledge and skills to meet the unique learning needs of these populations.
