President's Message

A Message from the President…

Dear PA CEC members,

It is my pleasure to serve as your current Pennsylvania Council for Exceptional Children during the 2017 year. I have been a member since 2002, and have served as a member of the board since 2003. I have loved working along side some of the strongest and most dedicated individuals I have ever met. Throughout all of the changes that have occurred I have seen and been inspired by our membership. I am confident that now, more than ever, we continue to work together to keep moving special education forward.

Are you on our facebook and twitter? We are looking to see where PACEC is and where we are going! If you want to pick up one of our PACEC is going places send an e-mail to for your copy!

On behalf of the 2016 conference committee I would like to extend a sincere thank you for participating and being a part of the conference. I know it was difficult for some to attend, but we had a great turn out and Shane Burcaw left an impact on everyone at the conference. It was an honor to listen to Shane, and our other speakers over the course of the two days. A huge thank you to Tom Guyer from Winsor Learning for sponsoring us. I want to thank CCBD and DLD for branching out and creating a lead in day that benefitted all in attendance. Also, thank you to CASE and the Student board who continued their strong traditions of leading in our conference. Thank you to our vendors, and exhibitors without these individuals we would not have been as successful. I also want to thank Megan Wilkinson and Liz Smith for their generosity and hospitality throughout our conference.  Honestly, I can go on about all of the individuals who made this conference a worthwhile event for everyone. You are all so appreciated for everything you did to make this conference a success.

Sadly as we start this year we did have some resignations. Cathy Skidmore resigned from her spot as public relations last October, Constance Lyttle resigned from CAN Director (to take on her new role of Representative to International CEC), and Justin Lien from his role as Zoom/ Constant Contact. Justin and Cathy have truly advanced our public relations and we wish them well with all of their future plans. Please join us in welcoming Kristin Cruz to Zoom/ Constant Contact, and we have a strong person coming into CAN (stay tuned!) who comes highly recommended.

As we start this year, I am excited and invigorated. We are working hard on our strategic plan, and have been fortunate to have assistance. I want to extend a huge thank you to Dr. Gina Scala for helping us kick start our plan. If you are interested in participating in a part of a volunteer committee please complete this link: Please keep your eye on our website, facebook, and twitter as we are using those to communicate needs as well.

Will you be attending Boston in April? If so let us know! We want to connect with you while we are there. Also, our conference will be November 9th and 10th at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey . Amber Hathorn is actively planning for this event.

I cannot wait to continue on this journey with you, the entire membership, and our board. I am looking forward to a successful year of mentoring Katelyn Burkhart, working under Lorie Taylors guidance, and alongside the rest of our board. I want to see where YOU are taking PACEC and what YOU are doing to benefit students who have exceptionalities. YOU are the reason we stay involved. If you are interested in being more involved send me an e-mail: We would love to hear from you.

Warmest Regards,

Michelle Kirias
