YMHFA training

The Pennsylvania Association Council for Exceptional Children (PACEC) is pleased to announce the following training opportunity provided in collaboration with The McDowell Institute, Bloomsburg University:

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training

Thursday, November 9, 2017 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel

Presenters: Darlene Perner, dperner@bloomu.edu, Bloomsburg University Robin Drogan, rdrogan@bloomu.edu, Bloomsburg University

Mental Health Problems are more common than heart disease, lung disease, and cancer combined. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans is estimated to have a diagnosable mental disorder such as depression, anxiety or substance abuse in any given year, including 13.7 million children. Of those children only a third gets help from formal mental health or substance abuse services.

Youth mental health first aid is an 8-hour training designed to teach people methods of assisting a young person who may be in the early stages of developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental crisis. It introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents and young adults, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent or young adult in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge.

This training event is being offered for a nominal fee to ensure ample support is available to youth across Pennsylvania's schools. Suggested participants in YMHFA training are listed below. Please note that this training is considered introductory and does not inform advanced skills/strategies.

Target Audience:
This training is open to classroom teachers and support/related services staff, university students, administrators, adult family members, college/university faculty and support staff.

Registration is available immediately, first come first served. Space is limited. Lunch will be provided. Upon attendance, you will receive a YMHFA textbook (for use during the training and for your reference, thereafter). Following your participation in the training, you will receive a link to complete a survey. You will also receive a printable certificate to verify that you completed 8 hours of YMHFA training.

You may register for the YMHFA Training through the PACEC Conference registration link. The fee which includes the textbook and lunch is $79. If you participate in the YMHFA Training on Thursday, then PACEC Conference Registration for Friday attendance is at a reduced rate of $40 (also available through the PACEC Conference registration link).
